William Stewart Halstead, the head surgeon at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, is credited with developing and introducing the latex glove to the medical community in 1894. The first latex glove was likely manufactured about 1883. Those working with harmful substances in the medical field needed this precaution taken to protect their skin. The wearer’s “feel” and awareness to their surroundings are improved by the glove’s close fit. The fact that some people are sensitive to latex and that the gloves provide very limited protection from coming into touch with chemicals or sharp objects doesn’t stop them from being used widely…
